Underwood opened the Class A Girls State Basketball Tournament with a 64-52 win over Southwest Minnesota Christian on Thursday afternoon at Maturi Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota. The Rockets shot 44% from the field and made 11-of-23 (47.8%) 3-point shots, while holding the Eagles to just 35% (21-60) shooting on the day. Underwood led 26-23 at the half and scored 38 second half points compared to 29 for Southwest Minnesota Christian.
Kallyn Grove registered a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while dishing out 4 assists, coming up with 2 steals and blocking 2 shots. Liz Lukken added 18 points, 5 assists and a pair of steals. Trinity Baker (13 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, 4 rebounds) and Mily Albjerg (11 points 3 assists) were also in double digits. Ezrah Baker had 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals.
Jocelyn Barron led the Eagles with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Ana Veldkamp scored 10 points and Makenzie Pap pulled down 10 rebounds. Madyson Fey had a team high 4 assists.
Underwood forced 14 turnovers and scored 14 points off those turnovers. Southwest Minnesota Christian had a commanding 44-32 edge on the boards.
The Rockets (28-3) ran their winning streak to ten games. They will now face top-ranked Goodhue at noon on Friday at Williams Arena in a championship semifinal contest.
