The season ended for the Hawley boys’ basketball team on Saturday as they fell to second-seeded Park Rapids Area, 67-57, in the Section 8AA quarterfinals.

“I’m incredibly proud of how hard our boys played tonight,” said Hawley Head Coach Nate Stoa. “They came out of the gates and executed the game plan really well. Noah Nelson (16 points) worked the inside of the zone and was able to get buckets both from the midrange and at the rim. We were able to work from inside to outside, but just couldn’t quite carry over our hot shooting from the other night or get to the free throw line enough to score with the clock stopped.”

Landon Bakke led the Nuggets with 19 points and Brevin Stoa added 9.

Park Rapids was led by Noah Larson with 20 points.  Noah Morris added 17, Ryan Carroll had 14 and Blake Morris contributed 11.

“I’m really proud of how hard our boys worked this year, and it’s always really tough to see it come to an end,” noted Coach Stoa.  “Our four seniors will always have a special place in my heart.  They are the first class that I’ve seen come through the program from beginning to end.  They did things right. They were an inclusive group that always tried to make each other better.  They showed tremendous growth.”

Coach Stoa shared these thoughts about his seniors.

Jack Justesen is the model of consistency and accountability. His calm and poised demeanor was a gift to his teammates and how he turned himself into a major asset for us on both ends of the floor.”

Davaun Stock was robbed of his senior year of sports due to an ACL injury. He would’ve made us better on both ends of the floor.  Credit to his character for continuing to be a great teammate despite not being able to play.”

Brevin Stoa had quite the career in a Nugget uniform. We’ve been able to watch his game grow from being a floor spacing 8th grader to a complete three level scorer with great vision.”

Landon Bakke saved some of his best basketball for the end when his teammates needed him the most. He really carried us in the playoffs with his hot shooting but even more so with his poise as a lead ball handler as Brevin attempted to play through multiple hand injuries.”

Coach Stoa concluded with this final thought, “This wasn’t the where we wanted our season to end, but this is a special group of young men that have built a brotherhood and will continue a lifelong journey together.”
