Rocket Girls Return to State with 71-61 Win over Hancock

The Underwood girls’ basketball team successfully defended their Section 6A title when they handed Hancock a 71-61 loss on Friday night at the Otter Fieldhouse in Fergus Falls.  Underwood went on a 19-2 run to take a 29-14 lead and led 40-23 at the half.  They increased their lead to 25 points in the second half. The Rockets took excellent care of the ball with only 8 turnovers in the game.  They also made 13-of-16 free throws on the night.

 

Liz Lukken had another huge game, scoring 29 points, making 7-of-8 free throws and grabbing 6 rebounds.  Ezrah Baker (14 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists), Kallyn Grove (13 points, 3 blocks, 2 assists) and Trinity Baker (12 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) joined Lukken in double digits.

Leaders for Hancock were Kaitlyn Staples (18 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists), Misti Zempel (17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), Kaitlyn Rohloff (15 points and Brooke VerSteeg (5 points, 12 rebounds.

Underwood (27-3) has won 9 straight games.  They will find out Saturday where they are seeded and who their first round opponent will be when they open state tournament play on Thursday at Maturi Pavilion on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
