The Barnesville boys’ basketball team earned their 20th win of the season with a first round Section 8AA victory over the Menahga Braves by a score of 74-46. “We played Menahga earlier in the year when we were still trying to find our identity and came out with a nice win at their place,” stated Barnesville Head Coach Matt Askegaard.

This first round game was the #13 seed at the #4. The Trojans started very fast, took the lead on the first possession and never looked back. They had a 49-21 lead at the half.

“In the second half we were able to get everyone into the game as we built our lead to over 35 points,” noted Coach Askegaard. “Offensively, we were very balanced as we had 11 guys score in the game. We were able to attack their man-to-man very effectively and when they went zone, we moved the ball and were able to get open shots.”

Barnesville shot 44.8% (30-67) from the field, making 10-of-24 (41.7%) 3-point shots.  They held Menahga to just 28% (15-54) shooting in the game.  The Trojans won the battle of the boards, 44-32 and had 17 assisted baskets.  They also scored 20 points off 19 Menahga turnovers.

Zach Bredman (18 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Gannon Bolgrean (13 points, 11 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals) led the Trojans, with Grant Quiggle contributing 9 points and Ethan Larson chipping in with 8 points and 4 rebounds.

Top scorers for Menahga were Bodie Berttunen (20 points, 9 rebounds) and Knaylor Howard (12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 steals).

With the win, the Trojans improved to 20-7.  They will host #5 East Grand Forks on Saturday at 7:00pm.

Menahga ends their season with an 8-19 record.
