The Barnesville boys’ basketball team shot 51% from the field, including 45.5% (10-22) from 3-point range on Monday night, as they defeated the Border West Buccaneers, 82-72.  The Trojans led 39-29 at the half and the two teams were even in the second half, with each team scoring 43 points.  The Trojans forced 18 Border West turnovers, which turned into 31 points.  They also recorded 22 assists on their 31 made baskets.

“We didn’t have a great start to the game as the Bucs took an early lead,” said Barnesville Head Coach Matt Askegaard.  “They built it to as many as 8, but we were able to get some stops and quality offensive possessions.  We were able to build a 10-point lead going into the half, much off that went through sophomore Grant Quiggle who hit some big shots to keep it going.  We had a good start to the second half, but we weren’t able to shake the Bucs as the hit some shots.  Midway through the second half we came with some full court pressure and that really forced them into some bad decisions.  We built the lead to as many as 18 at one point.”

Gannon Bolgrean (21 points, 6 rebounds, 8 assists, 8 steals) had a huge game for the Trojans.  Quiggle finished with a career high 17 points and added 4 rebounds, Ethan Larson contributed 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals, and Brady Nosal added 13 points and 5 rebounds.  Zach Bredman chipped in with 8 points and 5 assists.

“We shared the ball really well again tonight as we had almost six guys in double figures,” noted Coach Askegaard.  “When we share the ball like that on offense we are really tough to guard.”

Leaders for Border West were Kyle Kremer (26 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block), Holden Rinke (22 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 steals), Gunnar Hoffman (9 points, 4 rebounds, 5 assists) and Nolan Wilson (8 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists).  The Buccaneers shot the ball well, making 49% of their field goal attempts and 11-of-21 (52%) of their 3’s.  They also had 20 assists on their 29 made baskets.

Barnesville (18-7, 10-2 HOL) will wrap up their regular season schedule with a road game at East Grand Forks on Friday in what will be a big game for Section seeding.

Border West (11-14, 8-8 LEC) ends the regular season Friday with a home game against West Central Area.
