Playing without Jayna Gronewold, Mo Bugbee and Maddie Ballweg, the M State lady Spartans battled hard for four quarters on Saturday afternoon against the top ranked team in the country, the Rochester Yellowjackets. After falling behind 37-21 at the half, the Spartans stayed with the Yellowjackets throughout the second half, being out-scored 30-29 on the way. The Yellowjackets improved to 19-3 overall and 10-1 in the MCAC South with a 67-50 win.
Mia Blaskowski led M State with 21 points and 5 rebounds. Madi Foss had 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals, and Itzel Salazar contributed 10 points and a team high 7 rebounds.
Four Yellowjackets were in double digits, led by 16 points from Janae Bennett. Kara Goetzinger registered a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds and Jada James just missed a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds. She also led the team with 4 steals. Macaya Copeland had a team high 9 assists and scored 13 points.
M State (11-10, 5-5 MCAC South) will finish Southern Division play on Wednesday night at St. Cloud. They also have a final home game on Saturday at 1:00pm against Minnesota North - Itasca.
