After holding a slim 42-40 halftime margin, Pelican Rapids took control of their boys’ basketball game with Wadena-Deer Creek in the second half Friday night, out-scoring the Wolverines 37-21 to take a 79-61 victory on the road. Charlie Larson led four Vikings in double figures, scoring 18 points. Miguel Torres, Timmy Guler and Grady Larson added 12 points each.
“Hard-nosed win for us on the road tonight against a tough and physical Wadena-Deer Creek team,” stated Head Coach John Gullingsrud of Pelican Rapids. “We built a fifteen point lead in the first half, but were unable to hold it into halftime. We did a better job of playing defense without fouling in the second half, and cut down on our turnovers on offense to regain control.”
Teshe Loer led Wadena-Deer Creek with a game high 21 points. Lyrik Haug and Nathaniel Peterson finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Pelican Rapids (19-3, 9-2 HOL) will host non-conference opponent Staples-Motley on Tuesday, before closing out conference play at Perham on Friday.
With the loss, WDC goes to 15-8 on the season. They are 10-3 in the Park Region Conference and will resume conference play at Sebeka on Tuesday night.
