Welde (2G, 3A) and Stenstrom (2G, 2A) Pace Otters in 7-2 Win Over Storm

Jack Welde had a pair of goals and 3 assists, and Kellen Stenstrom contributed 2 goals and 2 assists in the Fergus Falls Otters 7-2 win over Sauk Rapids-Rice on Friday.  Fergus Falls had 41 shots on goal and the Storm finished with 34 shots.  Both senior goalies got in the game on Senior Night at the Community Arena.  Ryan Nelson stopped 32 of 34 shots and Tim Nanson didn’t face a shot in the 4-plus minutes he played.

 

Sauk Rapids-Rice struck first when Colin Gruber scored at 6:34 from Hunter Behling and Gunnar Jacobson.  The Otters responded with a power play goal from Stenstrom at 16:52, assisted by Michael Schmidt and Welde.

The Otters took control of the game with a 3-goal second period.  Stenstrom’s second of the game and 23rd of the season got things started at 2:37.  Welde and Shane Zierden earned assists on the goal.  Aiden Schake scored from Leighton Buckmeier at 7:20 and Zierden’s power play goal at 10:01 was setup by Buckmeier and Stenstrom, giving Fergus Falls a 4-1 lead.

Schmidt scored from Zierden and Welde at 3:10 of the third period, increasing the Otters lead to 5-1, but Gruber’s second of the night brought the lead back to 3 goals at 6:34 with Behling and Will Gunderson assisting.  Welde then scored from Stenstrom at 7:56 and an unassisted goal by Welde at 9:54 ended the scoring.

Fergus Falls (8-16) will close out their regular season schedule on Thursday at home against the Alexandria Cardinals.
