On Saturday, the Barnesville boys’ basketball team traveled to Concordia to play the Frazee Hornets. The Trojans led 31-25 at halftime and came out with a tough win, by a score of 51-49.

“It's hard to explain, but it was hard for us to get any flow in the entire game,” said Head Coach Matt Askegaard of Barnesville. “When we began to build a lead, the Hornets would get some stops of their own and they would then come down and cut into our lead. I believe we built 9 point leads in both halves, but couldn't get it to double digits. Most of that scoring came from their sophomore guard, Adam Vigen (22 points, 3 assists, 6 steals). It seemed anytime he put a shot up in the second half it was going in.  With about 5 minutes to go we found ourselves down 5, but we locked in on defense and would not allow them to score. Luckily, the ball was able to drop for us and we came out with a big conference win.”

Leaders for Barnesville were Gannon Bolgrean (22 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals), Ethan Larson (11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals) and Zach Bredman (8 assists).

Carter Sonnenberg (13 points, 13 rebounds, 3 assists) registered a double-double for the Hornets, and Alex Helmers had 10 points and 5 steals.

“It's been a challenging past two weeks as we have played 6 games in 14 days,” noted Coach Askegaard. “This doesn't allow for a lot of rest and preparation. However, many other teams are in the same boat as well. The weeks slow down a bit as we don't play until Thursday of next week when we travel to Perham.

We are now 15-5 overall and 8-0 in conference play.
