The Sartell Sabres shot the ball at a 47% clip, including 38% on 3’s, as they recorded a 74-54 win over Fergus Falls in a Central Lakes Conference girls’ basketball contest on Thursday night.  The Sabres led 46-24 at the half.  Fergus Falls cut the lead to 13 with a strong start to the second half.  “We didn’t come out ready to play and they did,” commented Head Coach Josh Steer of the Otters.  “They shot the ball well early and our defense looked discombobulated. We had a much better effort in the second half and I thought we rebounded the ball well.”

Fergus Falls won the battle of the boards, 32-29, with Brynn Sternberg leading the way with 7 rebounds.  Hattie Fullhart and Bella Anderson finished with 7 and 5 rebounds, respectively. The Otters shot just 33% overall and hit only 17% of their 3’s.  They also had 19 turnovers.  Sartell played aggressive defense and did a nice job neutralizing the Otters leading scorer, holding Brynn Sternberg to 10 points and no 3’s on the night.  Fullhart scored 9 points, and freshman Carlee Hirst caught fire in the second half, scoring all 13 of her points over the final 18 minutes to lead the Otters.  Hirst nailed all seven of her free throw attempts and the Otters were 17-for-21 from the foul line in the game.

Sartell had four players reach double figures, led by Kaia Gack with 17.  Marni Koosmann and Kelsey Tangen each scored 13 points off the bench, and Greta Crandall added 10 points.  Kaia Gack was the top rebounder for the Sabres with 7 and Tangen secured 6 boards.

Fergus Falls (13-6) saw their 3 game winning streak snapped.  The Otters will play at Detroit Lakes on Friday night.

Sartell (16-5) ran their winning streak to 5 games and will now play at Sauk Rapids-Rice next Tuesday.
