The M State Women's Basketball team struggled mightily in the second quarter of their MCAC Southern Division contest with Minnesota West on Wednesday. The lady Spartans made only 2-of-16 (12.5%) field goal attempts in the quarter and were outscored 15-4 as the Blue Jays built a 34-20 halftime lead and went on to post a 64-47 victory in Fergus Falls.
After taking a 19-16 first quarter lead, Minnesota West went on a 9-point run to take a 28-16 lead and proceeded to allow only 4 second quarter points to the lady Spartans as they fell behind, 34-20 at the half.
Mo Bugbee led M State with 15 points and 5 rebounds. Gronewold had 11, falling one short shy of reaching 1,000. With her first three points of the night she passed Laurie Rueckert, moving into second place on the all-time scoring list. Gronewold also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals and a blocked shot. Mia Blaskowski contributed 7 points and 5 rebounds.
M State finished the game with a shooting percentage of 35%. The lady Jays shot 41% and held a 38-24 advantage on the boards.
Olivia Hayenga had a monster game for Minnesota West, scoring 26 points, pulling down 2 rebounds and dishing out 7 assists. Other Blue Jays in double digits were Hattie DeVries with 13 and Dasia Potter with 11.
M State (10-7, 4-3 MCAC South) remains fourth in the South Division standings of the MCAC.
