Gronewold Moves Up All-Time Scoring List as Lady Spartans Top St. Cloud

Sophomore Jayna Gronewold scored 20 points and moved past her former high school coach, Anita (Follingstad) Heier, and into third place on the Lady Spartans all-time scoring list with 988 points, two behind Laurie Rueckert who is second on the list and just 18 behind all-time scoring leader, Pam Ledding, who has 1006 career points.  Gronewold added 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 6 steals as M State defeated St. Cloud, 62-56.

 

M State jumped out to a 9-0 lead and it took St. Cloud six minutes to get on the scoreboard.  The lady Spartans increased their lead to 15 points, but St. Cloud fought back to trail by 6, 35-29, at the half.  Twice in the second half the Cyclones closed to within a single point, however, they never led in the ballgame.

Itzel Salazar (13 points, 5 assists, 3 rebounds) and Mo Bugbee (11 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals) were also in double figures.  Madi Foss led M State with 9 rebounds, 5 of them on the offensive end and Mia Blaskowski finished with 4 points and 5 rebounds in 9 minutes on the court.

M State shot 49% (24-49) from the field and held a 29-22 edge on the boards.

The Cyclones were led by 12 points each from Lily Manning and Rylie DeMaine, while Olivia Mortenson had 11 points.

M State (10-6, 4-2 MCAC South) will host Minnesota West on Wednesday, January 31.
