Goals were hard to come by on Friday night at the Maple Grove Community Ice Arena. Maple Grove put 44 shots on the Alexandria net and Cardinal goalie Lexi Metcalf stopped 42 of the 43 she faced. The 44th shot went into an empty net as Alexandria had pulled Metcalf for an extra attacker in the final minutes. The Cardinals had 31 shots on goal with 22 of them coming in the second period. Maple Grove goalie Dani Strom earned the shutout.
Bella Shipley gave the home team the lead with a goal at 12:32 of the opening period. Grace Erickson and Kelsey Olson assisted on the goal. The goalies controlled things from there and it wasn’t until 16:07 of the third period that Olson scored into the empty net, off a pass from Shipley.
Alexandria (11-9) will play at Moorhead on Tuesday, and has home games Thursday against Willmar and Friday against a team from Grand Rapids, Michigan.
