Sophie Akerman scored 17 points to lead the Battle Lake girls’ basketball team to a 52-42 Little Eight Conference victory over the Ashby Arrows on Tuesday night.  “We were able to get an early lead on the Arrows, but then we stalled out and it was close throughout the first half,” reported Battle Lake Head Coach David Marso.  “We had a nice little run late in the half and took a 31-19 lead at halftime.  The second half was a back and forth affair, but we were able to hold on to the ten point lead.”

"I was very pleased with how my team came to to battle tonight and never backed down, even when we found ourselves in foul trouble," stated Ashby Head Coach Eric Schoenbauer. "Our reserves have a willingness to do what the team needs and a total team effort is very important."

The Lady Arrows were led by sophomore Chloe Finkelson with a season high 15 points and 7 rebounds, older sister BrookeLinn Finkelson contributed 10 points, 6 blocks, 5 rebounds, and 4 steals. Brooke fouled out of the contest with 9 minutes remaining in the game. Kaitlyn Finkelson stepped in and worked hard on defense and offense for the team. She had 8 boards and 7 points. Mia Thompson and Ashley Paulson continue to work hard on both ends of the court. Thompson had 5 points and 3 steals, Paulson added 4 points and 4 steals. Lily Balgaard had another strong inside game, but fouled out in the second half despite her time on the bench Balgaard had 5 rebounds and 1 point.

"As a team we were down by double digits at the half, but with teamwork and a willingness to do the correct play the Arrows got within 3 points, but without two key players down the stretch the Battlers were able to defeat the Arrows," said Coach Schoenbauer.

Battle Lake (2-10) will host Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley on Friday.

Ashby hosts Brandon-Evansville in a Little Eight Conference game on Friday.
