Detroit Lakes put 38 shots on Fergus Falls net minder Ryan Nelson on Saturday as the Lakers recorded a 5-3 win over the Otters on the final day of the Fergus Falls Boys’ Holiday Hockey Classic.  The Otters put 25 shots on the Lakers goal.  DL took advantage of their power play opportunities, converting on 2 of 3 tries.

Will Cymbaluk got the Lakers on the board early on as he converted a pass from Hudson Pettit at the 2:49 mark of the opening period.  A power play goal by Owen Chiodo at 7:28 was assisted by Cole Deraney and Brock Bender, giving the Lakers a 2-0 lead.  Shane Zierden responded on the power play to get the Otters on the scoreboard at 13:23.  Michael Schmidt and Leighton Buckmeier had assists on the goal as Fergus Falls cut the lead to 2-1 at the end of the first period of play.

Kellen Stenstrom tied the game at 2-2 with a goal from Zierden at the 5:32 mark of the second.  A power play goal by Dalton Songstad put the lead back on the Lakers side of the scoresheet at 3-2.  Pettit earned an assist on the goal.  DL increased their lead to 4-2 when Lawson Justesen scored from Songstad at 15:20.

Stenstrom notched his second goal of the night with an assist from Griffin Babolian at 13:58 of the third period, drawing the Otters within a goal at 4-3, however, Kash Benson’s empty net goal with 59 seconds remaining in the game gave the Lakers a two goal win, avenging an opening day loss to the Otters.

Fergus Falls (3-7) will host Warroad on Friday night and Hutchinson on Saturday afternoon.
