The Barnesville boys’ basketball team made the trek to Menahga Tuesday night to take on the Braves. The Trojans shot 44% (29-66) from the field, making 43% (12-28) from 3-point range, on the way to a 74-50 victory.  Menahga hit only 30% (17-57) of their shots and went 1-for-16 from beyond the arc.

“After two hard fought wins last week we were looking to put some consistency together offensively,” commented Barnesville Head Coach Matt Askegaard. “The last two games our defense and rebounding had really kept us in the game and we definitely wanted to keep that going. However, it's much easier, and more enjoyable to play defense when the ball is going in the basket.”

Gannon Bolgrean had a team high 21 points to lead the Trojans.  He also snagged 9 rebounds and dished out 4 assists.  Brady Nosal and Major Ness were also in double figures with 15 and 14 points, respectively.  Zach Bredman turned in a solid all-around floor game with 8 points, 10 rebounds, 6 assists and one steal.

“Tonight we opened the scoring by getting some easy looks in the paint and we got them to fall,” reported Coach Askegaard. “This opened up the outside and we were able to catch and shoot in rhythm. Gannon Bolgrean connected from the outside to get us going and Major Ness came off the bench to knock down a few 3s as well. We mixed our defenses nicely to keep them off balance and took a 35-15 lead at the half.  The second half was much more of the same. We got the lead close to 30 and everyone was able to enter the game. It was a great team effort and win on the road. We brought a great amount of energy, something that had been lacking the last two games.”

Menahga was led by Bodie Berttunen (23 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals) and Carder Jettmann (11 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals).  Knaylor Howard contributed 8 points and 9 rebounds.

Barnesville (3-1) will host Frazee on Thursday for their home opener which will be a doubleheader with the girls.

Menahga (3-3) is off until January 9 when they will host Wadena-Deer Creek.
