It was a nice bounce back win for the Perham Yellowjackets on Tuesday night as they recorded a 71-60 win over East Grand Forks. Perham jumped out to a quick lead, with Willow Thiel scoring 8 of the first 10 points. EGF wouldn’t go away, though, and they kept chipping away at the single digit lead. Most of the early damage was done from the free throw line as the Jackets piled up fouls, registering 13 in the first half compared to 4 fouls committed by the Green Wave. With Thiel on the bench with 3 fouls and Cora Grismer and Kennedy Pilgrim with 2 each, Kaia Anderson scored 10 big first half points and Greta Raser added 2 huge three pointers to help Perham to a 32-26 halftime advantage.

Cora Grismer, Kennedy Pilgrim, and Willow Thiel used the extra “rest” in the first half to come out in the second half with vengeance. The 3 girls combined to score all 39 second half points for Perham! Grismer confidently handled the point guard duties against the Green Wave press all night and also hit some big shots. Pilgrim hit 4 threes, as well as holding EGF leading scorer well below her average. And Willow was Willow, ending the night with 31 points and 13 rebounds. Her night was highlighted by 2 big threes in the second half, adding to the 11 total threes made in 20 attempts by the Jackets. Although the game stayed fairly tight, it was never in doubt as Perham led by about 10 most of the last 18 minutes.

The contributions made by the bench was a big reason for this win. Cate Diggins filled in admirably while Willow was in foul trouble, Kaia Starzl played her continually amazing defense, and Greta Raser was a spark plug to a struggling offense at the time. And, once again, without scoring, Ryleigh Mickelson impacted the game with 7 assists and 7 steals, including a huge offensive rebound followed by a beautiful dime to Willow for a wide open basket late in the game.

Although there are things to tighten up, the Jackets played with more intensity and energy than the last time they took the court!

Perham (6-2) will host Fergus Falls on Thursday night at the HIVE.
