Warriors Strike Early in 5-2 Win Over Otter Boys

Brainerd scored 3 first period goals on Thursday in Fergus Falls.  The Otters battled back strong but couldn’t dig themselves out of the hole, falling to the Warriors by the score of 5-2.  For the first time this season the Otters outshot an opponent, putting 33 shots on goal compared to 29 for Brainerd.

 

Brainerd struck early, scoring their first goal 1:19 into the contest.  Brady Johnson put the puck over Tim Nanson’s left shoulder after receiving a pass from Ashton Extrand.  At 2:15, Dylan Wikoff notched a power play goal from Kale Koop and the Warriors had a 2-0 lead.  They increased their lead to 3-0 when Chad King scored at 9:23 from Kade Stengrim and Martin Timmons.

Fergus Falls scored the lone goal in the second period when Shane Zierden put the puck in the net on the power play at 11:45.  Assists were recorded by Griffin Babolian and Jack Welde.  The Otters had a 17-10 advantage in shots during the second period.

The Otters had a chance to trim the lead to one goal when they went on the power play at 5:51 of the third period, however, they couldn’t capitalize on the opportunity.  Instead, Brainerd made it a 4-1 game at 9:10 when Wikoff scored his second of the night, assisted by Carter Gustason and Koop.  A power play goal at 12:09 by Drew Haakonson, assisted by Chad King and Stengrim put the score at 5-1.  Fergus Falls ended the scoring on a Jack Welde power play goal at 14:29.  Kellen Stenstrom assisted on the goal.

Tim Nanson had 24 saves in the Fergus Falls net and Ryan Gerlich stopped 31 Otter shots on goal.

Fergus Falls (1-4) will host River Lakes on Tuesday night.
