Alexandria put 36 shots on goal Tuesday night and held off Willmar for a 4-3 girls’ hockey win. The lady Cards jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period and notched the first goal of the second period to increase their lead to 3-0, but had to hold off a determined Willmar team for a 4-3 win. Willmar finished with 17 shots on goal and their comeback attempt was cut short by an Alexandria effort that allowed them only 2 shots on goal in the third period.
Alexandria scored at 6:11 of the opening period when Julia Doherty found the back of the net off an assist from Jersey Severson. Emma Ramstorf’s goal at 16:57, assisted by Sophia Korynta, gave the lady Cards a 2-0 lead after one period of play.
Kennedy Ellingson scored just 1:46 into period two, increasing the Alexandria lead to 3-0 with her unassisted tally. Willmar then scored back-to-back goals within 31 seconds of each other to trim the lead to 3-2. Sophia Quinn’s power play goal from Birgit Figenskau and Chloe Lownsbury got Willmar on the board at 5:33 and then at 6:04, Avery Olson scored on the power play from Rebecca Dawson and Avery Quinn. Kennedy Ellingson’s second goal of the night upped the Alexandria lead to 4-2 with Doherty earning an assist, but Willmar made it a one goal game on Sophia Quinn’s second tally of the night, again assisted by Figenskau and Lownsbury.
The teams played a scoreless third period to finish with a 4-3 Alexandria victory.
Alexandria goalie Rachael Mohr stopped 14 shots and Erin Eilers came up with 32 saves in the Willmar net.
Alexandria (7-3) has won 3 straight games and 4 of their last 5. They will play at Wayzata next Tuesday.
