The Breckenridge Cowgirls and Barnesville Trojans engaged in a competitive Heart O’ Lakes Conference girls’ basketball contest Thursday night in Barnesville with the visitors coming out on top, 70-68.  The Cowgirls Parker Yaggie found Emily Gowin, who hit a contested three-pointer with 1.5 seconds to go for the game winner.

Breckenridge led 64-57 with 2:16 remaining in the game.   A basket by Ava Follingstad, a Kenadee Gray steal and layup and turnover by the Cowgirls that Follingstad turned into another layup cut the lead to one with 1:24 to go.  A pair of Sydney Roberts free throws pushed the Cowgirls lead to 3 with 58 seconds remaining, but a Follingstad layup made it a 67-66 game with 49 seconds on the clock.  A Breck turnover with 41 seconds left led to a put-back basket by Follingstad that made it 68-67 with 12 seconds showing on the clock.  A timeout with 6 seconds left at half court led to the final attempt and the winning shot by Gowin.

“I am really proud of how our girls responded tonight,” said Barnesville Head Coach Ryan Bomstad.  “It was a hard fought game.  You expect these in a HOL game, especially with these two teams.  With 2:16 to go, not many people in this building though we had a chance to win.  Our team fought through much adversity and had a chance.  Sometimes you have to give the other team a tip of the cap.  Emily made a play.  I really feel these types of games will help us later down the road.  There were so many positives tonight.  We have a new core of players who are finding their path. Yes, we are disappointed with the loss, but we certainly can build on all the positive things.  Bella Snobl came in and gave us great minutes and energy.  We get another chance to get better Friday when we travel to Kindred.  They are fast, push the ball, and are super talented.  It will be a great opportunity.”

Abby John and Ava Follingstad led the Trojans with 23 and 17 points, respectively.
