The Alexandria Cardinal wrestling team competed in the Defender Invite in Melrose on Friday. The tournament featured 13 boys’ varsity teams. They also hosted a girls’ only tournament that featured girls from 22 different teams. Alexandria currently has 1 girl competing this season, 7th grader Lilly Faber competed in the girls’ varsity high school tournament. Her weight class featured 14 girls. Lilly received a bye in the first round before taking a loss to the eventual champion from Sartell in the quarter finals. Lilly picked up 3 wins in the consolation side of the bracket with 2 of them being pins to finish in 5th place. Girls wrestling is really taking off in the state of Minnesota and this will be the 3rd year that they have a girl only state tournament in conjunction with the boys. Lilly is paving the way for hopefully a lot of future Cardinal girls wrestlers!

The boys’ team had an exceptional tournament finishing in 6th place out of 13. Teams were allowed to enter additional wrestlers at weight classes so most of the brackets had 14-16 wrestlers in them. Logan Timm led the way at 121 pounds coming into the bracket unseeded. He rattled off two pins to start the tournament and then pinned the #2 seed from Paynesville in the semifinals. In the finals he recorded a shutout 5-0 victory over the number 1 seed from the host team Sauk Centre/Melrose. Mason McGrane reached the finals as well at 133lbs. He had a thriller match in the semifinals when he was put to his back early in the first period. He had a lot of guts to fight from getting pinned for almost the whole period. He turned the tides in the second period to record the pin. In the finals he fell behind 5-0 to the #8 state ranked opponent from Mora. He threw his opponent to his back in a tight headlock in the 3rd period nearly pinning him about 4 different times. However, we didn't get the call there and Mason lost by a decision. 5 other Cardinal wrestlers put nice tournaments together and found themselves on the podium by tournament end which was around 10pm. 8th grader Brock Mandershied finished in 6th at 107lbs, Ty Larson got 5th at 127lbs, Mason Evjen finished 6th at 139, Zach Richards 5th at 145lbs, Landon Raths was 6th at 189lbs, and Jaxon Werder finished 6th at 215lbs. Brock Manderschied, Shane Timm, Karl Franson, and Connor Zirbes all picked up their first career varsity wins.

Paynesville won the tournament with 206 points, followed closely by BBE with 204.5, Thief River Falls was 3rd, Osakis 4th, Mora 5th, and Alexandria 6th place with 116.5 points. The other 7 competing were EVW, Albany, Robbinsdale Armstrong, Sauk Centre/Melrose, Ottertail Central, Pierz, and Ortonville. The Cards host Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton & United Clay Becker on Tuesday Dec. 5th for a section showdown beginning at 5pm.
