The Alexandria boys’ hockey team took on longtime rival Brainerd on Thursday night in Brainerd for the Warriors home opener. The two teams battled through 51 minutes of competitive hockey and couldn’t settle on a winner as they played to a 2-2 tie.

Senior right winger Gavin Olson got the Cards on the board in the first period on the power play by redirecting a shot from senior captain Jack Lamski.

The defensive game was strong for both teams through the 2nd period as neither team was able to score.

The Warriors were finally able to get on the board in the 3rd period to tie the game at one apiece. With just 4 minutes left in the game, the Warriors would take advantage of an odd man rush to go up 2 to 1. The Cardinals kept pressing and were able to tie the game with just 47 seconds left in regulation. Gavin Olson scored his second of the night after Lamski sprung senior assistant captain Leo Kompelien loose on the rush who fed Olson for a back door tap in.

The Cardinals continued to press through the 8-minute overtime but were unable to capitalize on their chances and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.

Senior goaltender Brady Metcalf started between the pipes for the Cards, making 21 saves on 23 shots. The Cardinals continue with Central Lakes Conference play as they take on Sartell Tuesday night in Sartell.
