Matt Askegaard begins his second year at the helm for the Barnesville boys’ basketball team.  The Trojans were 18-9 in his first season as head coach.  The team made a good run in the post season, beating Fergus Falls and the number six ranked Perham Yellowjackets in Perham before falling in the Section semifinals to a DGF team that went on to place fourth in the State Tournament.

Players returning from that successful squad include Seniors Zachary Bredman (Guard, All-Conference, 7 ppg, 4 rpg, 4 apg) and Ethan Larson (Forward), and juniors Gannon Bolgrean (Guard, All-Conference, 10 ppg, 6 rpg, 2 apg) and Brady Nosal (Guard).

New players to the varsity include 6’4” senior Atticus Olson, several juniors and a few sophomores who will be competing for varsity minutes.

“It’s hard to say how and who will shake out in the rotation,” said Coach Askegaard.  “Once the football players joined us the competition in practice greatly increased.  Our expectations this year are much like last year.  We feel we can be towards the top in the conference and the section.  With some young/new guys getting some time to start the season we will go through some growing pains, but I expect us to be playing our best basketball in the middle of February into March.  Our conference and section graduated a great amount of talent last year so it will be fun and interesting to see which teams grow and rise to the top.”

Askegaard is assisted by Adam Tonsfeldt and Justin Haugen.
