Northern Lakes Spoils Home Opener for Otter Boys

Northern Lakes opened up a 4-0 lead after two periods in the home opener for Fergus Falls and went on to post a 5-1 victory over their Section rivals.  The Lightning held a 36-23 advantage in shots on goal, putting six shots on Otter goalie Ryan Nelson in the first period when they built an early 3-0 lead and held Fergus Falls to only 4 shots.

Logan Verville wasted no time getting Northern Lakes on the board as he scored at 3:13 of the first period with assists from Easton Anderson and Wyatt BalmerJerome Martin made it 2-0 at the eight minute mark with an assist to Preston Verness.  Anderson’s goal at 16:14 was setup by Balmer and gave the Lightning a 3-0 lead.

A second period tally by Taylor Berg, assisted by Verville and Cole Anderson gave the Lightning a 4-1 lead.

Michael Schmidt’s power play goal in the third period got the Otters on the board.  Aiden Schake and Sam Dirkman assisted on the goal.  Northern Lakes added an insurance goal at 9:39 when Berg notched his second of the night with an assist from Drew Paulbeck.

Nelson stopped 31 of the 36 shots he faced in the Fergus Falls goal.

The Otters will host Sartell-St. Stephen on Thursday, December 7.
