Barnesville ended their girls’ basketball season with a 15-11 record last year.  “Our players worked extremely hard to fight out of the lower half of the section in the middle of the season to make a top 4 seed at tournament time,” reported Head Coach Ryan Bomstad.  “We took third place in the very tough Heart O’ Lakes Conference.”

Losing Sydney Strand, Kenzie Skogen, Emily Smith and Jaida Bontjes creates some challenges for the Trojans, but Coach Bomstad says, “The year’s team will be molding a new core group of players.  We will look a bit different with some new young faces in major roles.  We should have some competitive practices as we are looking to fill four spots due to graduation.”

Returning starters include guards Abby John (JR) and Kenadee Gray (SR).  Other letter winners returning are seniors Lindsey Rotz (Guard) and Haley Pearson (Forward), and juniors Ava Follingstad (Forward), Macie Pauna (Guard), Ella Cossette (Guard), Lexi Hoeft (Forward), Bella Snobl (Forward) and Sophie Frederick (Guard).

Key varsity newcomers are sophomores Aubryn Hinsz (Guard), Lexi Bontjes (Guard), Anika Cossette (Guard), Ashley Maneval (Forward) and Alexis Paul (Forward).

“We will need to take care of the ball, limit the opposition on the boards, and play good, solid defense to compete in the conference and section,” added Coach Bomstad.  “We are excited for this group as they are hard workers and hungry.  Just like every year, we want to play our best basketball at the end of the year to give us a chance to play deep into March.”

Bomstad, who will be assisted by Alli Honrud and Emma Nielsen, looks to Perham and Pelican Rapids to be the top teams in the HOL, while Thief River Falls, East Grand Forks and Wadena-Deer Creek will be added to the mix in Section 8AA.
