Early Lead Slips Away as Alexandria Falls to St. Thomas Academy in State Semifinal

The Alexandria Cardinals built a 23-0 lead at US Bank Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, however, St. Thomas Academy scored 42 unanswered points before the Cardinals finished the scoring with a late fourth quarter touchdown for a 42-30 final in favor of St. Thomas Academy.  Savion Hart ran for 227 yards on 25 carries and reached the end zone 3 times to lead St. Thomas to the win in the State AAAAA Semifinal contest.

 

Alexandria scored with 8:51 left in the first quarter when Chase Thompson connected with Evan Kludt on a 61 yard TD pass and Daniel Jackson added the extra point kick for a 7-0 lead.  With 1:05 left in the period, Mason Gorghuber hauled in a 5 yard touchdown pass from Thompson and Jackson’s PAT kick put the Cards ahead, 14-0.

At 10:32 of the second quarter, Macklen Heydt carried the ball over the goal line from 2 yards out and the PAT attempt was blocked, leaving Alexandria with a 20-0 lead.  They increased the lead to 23-0 on a 29 yard field goal by Jackson with 6:25 left in the half.  St. Thomas Academy started their offensive onslaught with 3:34 left in the half when Luke Dobbs caught a 48 yard touchdown pass from Maximus Sims.  A two-point conversion run by Hart made it a 23-8 game.  Hart then scored on a 5 yard run and Declan Wilson added the extra point to bring St. Thomas to within 8 points at halftime, as they trailed 23-15.

St. Thomas Academy tied the game at 23-23 with 10:26 left in the third quarter on a 16 yard run by Hart and his two-point conversion run.  With 6:07 left in the period, Avery Buckner was on the receiving end of a 69 yard aerial from Sims and Wilson added another PAT kick to give St. Thomas their first lead of the day at 3-23.

A 29 yard TD pass from Sims to Dobbs just 8 seconds into the fourth quarter put St. Thomas ahead by two scores at 36-23, although the PAT kick was blocked.  Hart put a cap on his strong rushing day by scoring on a 19 yard run for a 42-23 St. Thomas advantage.  The final Alexandria TD of the day came on a 53 yard pass from Talan Witt to Mason Witt with 1:11 on the clock and put the final score at 42-30.

St. Thomas Academy had 471 yards of offense on the day with 226 on the ground and 245 through the air.  Dobbs caught 6 passes for 114 yards and a pair of TD’s, while quarterback Maximus Sims completed 12-of-15 passes for 245 yards and 3 scores.  Defensively, Edward Knapp (8 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle) and Charles Kern (7 solo tackles, 1 assisted tackle, 1 interception) led the way.

Alexandria was led by Thompson, who threw for 330 yards, completing 28-of-47 passes.  Gorghuber caught 9 passes for 65 yards, Kadyn Weber had 8 receptions for 88 yards and Andrew Flaten caught 4 balls for 77 yards.  Mason Witt had 3 receptions for 71 yards and Kludt caught 2 passes for 63 yards.  In all, Thompson completed passes to 9 different receiver.  Alexandria finished with 455 (395 passing, 60 rushing) total yards.  Defensively, Kludt picked off a pass and Dean Lempka recovered a fumble.  Sawyer Rumohr forced a fumble and had 6 solo tackles.  Brayden Staples also recorded 6 tackles on the day.

Alexandria ends their season with an 11-1 record.
