Northland Women Turn Back Lady Spartans, 70-52

The Northland lady Pioneers shot the ball efficiently Saturday afternoon, hitting 44.3% (27-61) of their field goal attempts and hitting 50% (10-20) from 3-point range.  Their hot shooting and a commanding 40-25 edge on the boards propelled Northland to a 70-52 victory over the lady Spartans at M State in Fergus Falls.

 

The Pioneers had four players in double figures, led by Emma Osborn with 16 points.  Tiyana Schwinghammer and Shavonda Bender added 13 points each, and Josie Iverson chipped in with 11 points.  Schwinghammer added a team high 15 rebounds to complete her double-double.  She also had 4 assists and 4 steals, along with a blocked shot.  Iverson dished out 3 assists.

M State hit only 16.7% (3-18) of their 3’s and shot 34.5% (20-58) overall.  Itzel Salazar and Jayna Gronewold were in double digits with 13 and 10 points, respectively.  Mia Blaskowski and Mo Bugbee added 7 points each.  Kiera Cox led the lady Spartans with 5 rebounds, while Salazar and Bugbee each recorded 4 steals.  Salazar had a team high 3 assists.

Northland led 21-16 after the first quarter and had a 31-23 advantage at the half.  Their lead with 49-35 after three quarters and they closed out the game by outscoring M State 21-17 in the fourth quarter.

M State will travel to Ellendale, North Dakota Monday night to face Trinity Bible College.
