The Alexandria Cardinals finished third and the Perham Yellowjackets were fifth at the Class AA Girls State Cross Country Championship on Saturday at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on the campus of the University of Minnesota.  Marshall won the event with 81 points, St. Paul Highland Park was second with 101 after consulting the tie breaker (placement of the #6 runner for each) team.  Alexandria also scored 101 points but had to settle for third place.  Northfield was fourth with 126, just 3 points ahead of fifth place Perham with 129.

"Cassie Wellman had a great showing at the state meet with a top 20 finish, and an excellent 19:14.5 on a soggy course," said Fergus Falls Head Coach Niki Welde.  "Being in the final race of the day meant that the wet conditions on the course were pretty chewed up by the time she raced. She handled it well, pulling off a great season time.  She was able to have teammates present to go through her pre-race prep, including a group huddle.  This is something that was new to the meet this year, that her teammates could gain access to the athletes as needed. As an individual runner, you find yourself sharing the line with the other individual qualifiers from our section.  That can be a bit intimidating.  Cassie handled it just fine and had her crew near.  She had a strong start running in that top 20 from the beginning.  Running on those soft conditions makes it like running in sand in spots, and you are not able to always pick up and go with the same footing you are used to.  It's taxing on the legs.  Her 19:14.5 showed that she had the strength to compete through those conditions. We are all really proud of her finish, and the jump she made from her first appearance at this meet in her 7th grade year."
