The Breckenridge-Wahpeton Cross County concluded their first year of moving up to Section 8AA cross country at Little Falls on Thursday afternoon.  Conditions for running were ideal with temps in the low 50’s, a light breeze, and a misty drizzle in the air.   “Since the co-ops of Breckenridge and Wahpeton, this is most talented girls’ team we put together,” commented Head Coach Larry Lasch of the Storm.  “That team consisted of three middle schoolers, and freshman, two sophomores, and one senior.  The future looks very good for the Lady Storm harriers.”

In a very good field of runners, Lucie Comstock and Kiera Wiertzema set their sights on qualifying for the state meet, which this year took a time of 19:33 and 12th place finish in a field of 88 runners.  Lucie ended up 19th place in 19:43, but fought to the finish trying to move up the seven spots.  Kiera finished 27th, in 20:11.    As a team, the girls placed 8th of 13 team.  Gracie Falk was the team’s third runner in 41st place.  Jasmyn Benidict and Addie King fought tough to place 59th and 63rd, respectively.   Rounding out the varsity runners were Aubrey Bosen, 79th and Ashlyn Haire, 86th.   "Ashlyn has been in cross country for six years and during that time, she’s had her ups and downs, but Ashlyn has been a persistent hard worker and earned her role on varsity this season," said Coach Lasch.  "We will miss her leadership next season.  Also traveling with the team was Jenna Seibold who only raced once this season and was sidelined with an injury.  Jenna has also devoted six years to the program and this year in lieu of racing, she provided team support, especially helping coach our Middle School runners."

Senior Noah Berge led the Storm boys in his last high school cross country race to a 32nd place finish, with his best time of the season, 17:41.5.  "Noah brought his encouragement and swagger to a young team," reported Lasch.  "Next fall, Noah plans to take his running talents to the University of Jamestown."   Despite placing last in the 13-team field, the Storm boys posted five season best times.   Also running season best times were Gabriel George, 58th place, Jack Ekren, 74th, Harry Ockhardt, 76th and Ethan Lauritsen, 90th place.  "Ethan was the only other senior in the lineup," noted Lasch. " Since 9th grade, Ethan has supplied the team with steady solid work ethic and led by example for the younger boys to follow.  Troy Berndt just missed a personal best to place 59th and Jaxon Hill place 89th.   This race was just a steppingstone for the Storm’s boys’ program which featured three freshmen in the lineup and host of other young running ready to fill the shoes of Noah and Ethan next season."
