Lausten's Big Day Carries Eagles to Upset Win Over Cowboys

The New York Mills Eagles overcame a 12-0 halftime lead on the way to a 26-18 victory over Breckenridge in the Section 6A football semifinals on Saturday afternoon.  Teagan Lausten had a huge day for the Eagles, running for 150 yards on 31 carries and scoring a pair of touchdowns.  New York Mills finished with 186 rushing yards and 228 yards of total offense on the day.

 

Bailey Evans scored a pair of first half touchdowns for the Cowboys, a 1 yard run in the first quarter and a 5 yard run in the second quarter.  Both PAT tires failed, leaving the Cowboys with a 12-0 halftime lead.

New York Mills started to turn things around on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter as Lausten broke loose for a 55 yard TD run, cutting the Breckenridge lead to 12-6.  With 1:32 left in the third quarter, the Eagles tied the game on a 1 yard run by quarterback Finn Roder.  Following a blocked Breckenridge punt, Roder found the end zone again and Lausten scored the two-point conversion for a 20-12 lead after three quarters.

Lausten’s 19 yard fourth quarter touchdown run with 8:20 to play in the game gave New York Mills a two touchdown lead at 26-12.  Breckenridge completed the scoring on a 12 yard pass from Evans to Dawson Wienbar with 5:15 on the clock.

Roder completed 3-of-6 passes for 42 yards and ran for 33 yards on 13 carries.  Gage Brasel caught one pass for 31 yards and Lausten had 2 catches for 11 yards.  The Eagles survived 4 turnovers in the game.

Evans and Wienbar each had an interception for the Cowboys.  Offensively, Evans completed 5-of-12 passes for 67 yards and ran for 78 yards on 17 attempts.  Paul Armitage had 41 rushing yards on 13 carried and receiving leaders were Wienbar (2 catches, 30 yards) and Jacob Kunkel (2 catches, 23 yards).  Breckenridge finished with 125 yards on the ground and 67 through the air for a total of 192 yards.

The Cowboys finish their season with a 5-5 record.

New York Mills will now face Parkers Prairie at 12:30pm Friday, November 3 at the Fargodome.
