The Breckenridge Cowboys got off to a fast start in their Section 6A quarterfinal playoff contest against Pine River-Backus on Tuesday night as they built a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 35-14 victory. Breckenridge amassed 381 yards of offense with 341 of those yards coming on the ground. They also had 18 first downs and took advantage of 3 turnovers.
Bailey Evans found the end zone on a 55 yard run in the first quarter and booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter, Paul Armitage scored from 25 yards out and Evans added the PAT kick for a 14-0 lead at the end of one.
Armitage scored on a 41 yard run in the second quarter and the extra point kick by Evans made it a 21-0 lead for the Cowboys. A 9 yard TD pass from Evans to Dawson Wienbar and an extra point kick by Trey Vogelbacher made the halftime score, 28-0.
Lawson Oliphant scored on a 4 yard run between a pair of Pine River-Backus TD’s in the fourth quarter, and Evans added the PAT kick.
Oliphant led the Cowboys with 116 yards on 16 carries. Evans ran for 91 yards on 7 attempts and Armitage finished with 82 rushing yards on 5 carries. Evans completed 5-of-14 passes for 68 yards and Jacob Kunkel had 2 receptions for 40 yards.
Defensively, Vogelbacher had a pick, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble, and Tucker Tshakert recorded a sack. Jacob Kunkel (5 solo tackles, 4 assisted tackles) and David Erlandson (2 solo tackles, 7 assisted tackles) were the leading tacklers for Breckenridge.
Pine River-Backus had 200 rushing yards and 61 passing yards for a total of 261 yards of offense. They recorded 16 first downs in the game.
Breckenridge, the number 2 seed in Section 6A, will host New York Mills in a semifinal round contest at 2:00pm Saturday. The sixth-seeded Eagles upset third-seeded West Central Area, 35-20 in Barrett on Tuesday night.
The other 6A semifinal will feature top-seeded Parkers Prairie, a 50-0 winner over Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, taking on number four, Lake Park-Audubon. The Raiders advanced with a 20-0 win over Ashby-Brandon-Evansville.
