The second seeded Fergus Falls boys soccer team hosted 3rd seeded Pelican Rapids Thursday evening at the Otter Stadium Field.  The Vikings scored a pair of first half goals and held on for a 2-1 victory, advancing to the North sub-section championship game against top-seeded Hillcrest on Saturday at 2:00pm at the Otter Stadium Field at Kennedy Secondary School in Fergus Falls.

“Pelican came out fast and put some pressure on offensively,” commented Otters Head Coach Joel Heikes.

The Vikings were able to score in the first ten minutes of play when Farhan Dahir found the back of the net. Then at the 28 minute mark the Vikings sent a very nice through ball that beat the Otter defense.  Abdinasir Omar converted, bringing the score to 2-0.

“In the second half Fergus continued to fight through the very physical attack from Pelican and managed to keep the ball in their offensive zone most of the time,” reported Coach Heikes.

At the 60 minute mark of the game the Otters were awarded a deep free kick. Marshall Fellbaum took the kick and beat the goalie, but a Pelican player intentionally batted the ball away with his hand which resulted in a red card for him and a PK for the Otters. Jose Rodriguez took the PK and scored, cutting the Vikings lead to 2-1.

“The Otters fought a hard and clean game the rest of the way but ultimately the very physical game the Vikings were allowed to play kept us from scoring again,” added Coach Heikes. “This was a very hard loss. The Otters played a good game and played it the right way and dominated in shots and time of possession but came out on the wrong side on the scoreboard.”
