The Pelican Rapids Vikings traveled to Frazee for a Heart O’ Lakes Conference volleyball match on Thursday. The Vikings and Hornets had a pink out night to honor breast cancer awareness month and it was a great community event honoring this special cause.  The Vikings were coming off a tough week with 2 hard losses to New York Mills and Perham and knew this was a crucial match to build some confidence going into a 3 game week next week.  Pelican Rapids won the hard fought battle 25-22, 27-25, 25-17.

“The Vikings knew Frazee has some great servers and that we had to pass well to win this game,” stated Head Coach Heidi Isaman of Pelican Rapids.  “Our passers really stepped up and we passed at a high level all night long.  Libero Morgan Korf read their short servers well and helped to get us in system most of the night.  Middle hitter Anna Roisum stuck to the game plan and cut hard off their middle blocker to get some monster kills for us and setter Ellie Welch really led our team well tonight feeding Roisum and getting our hitters the ball where they needed it to score.  Seniors Ellie Welch and Marie Backstrom both had 2 great serving runs in set one to increase our lead.”

Isaman continued, “Set 2 the Vikings had a slow start and did not pass the ball as well.  We got ourselves briefly out of system and the Hornets took advantage.  After some strong blocking in set one, our block got a little sloppy and we had some ball control issues.  It was a tight back and forth set but the Vikings just could not get a run going.  Then our passing improved and junior Zayla Arrow had a few big kills to switch the momentum.  Ellie Welch and Marie Backstrom got some big touches at the net and the Vikings fought back to win an exciting set 2.  Set 3 the Vikings started strong with a nice service run from Ari Hovland. Anna Roisum continued to dominate at the net and Claudia Gurath and Morgan Korf played great defense on their out of system offense.  Then Marie Backstrom had another great run on the service line and Ellie Welch continued to set the ball really well to all her hitters. Tonight was a great team effort and I could not be more proud of how the girls came ready to play.”

Leaders on the court were Korf (28 digs), Gurath (10 digs, 4 kills), Roisum (10 digs, 14 kills, 11 assists), Welch (11 assists, 9 kills, 1 ace, 6 digs, 3.5 blocks), Arrow (6 kills, 2 digs), Hovland (8 digs) and Backstrom (6 digs, 3 kills, 2 aces).

The Vikings have a busy week next week hosting LPA Monday, traveling to Staples-Motley on Tuesday and hosting Barnesville on Thursday.
