Timmy Guler returned to the lineup on Friday night for the Pelican Rapids football team and made an immediate impact, rushing for 124 yards and 3 touchdowns and completing 9-of-13 passes for 86 yards and another TD.  He also threw 3 2-point conversion passes and ran for another two-point conversion.  The bottom line was a 54-6 Viking victory over the Crookston Pirates.

Jack Kapenga got the Vikings on the board on a 58 yard run in the first quarter and Guler’s first 2-point conversion run gave the home team an 8-0 lead.  Guler then capped an 8-play, 64 yard drive with a 30 yard touchdown run and hit Treyvon Benson with a 2-point conversion pass for a 16-0 lead.  Guler’s 40 yard TD run and 2-point pass to Channing Russman gave Pelican Rapids a 24-0 lead after one quarter.

Guler’s 32 yard TD in the second quarter put the score at 30-0 and his 33 yard scoring toss to Luke Sjolie, followed by a 2-point pass to Benson gave the Vikings a 38-0 halftime advantage.

In the third quarter, Maclain Hovland hooked up with Justin Jacobson on a 13 yard TD pass and Mark Kapenga ran the ball in for the two-point conversion, increasing the lead to 46-0.  Hovland the connected with Miguel Torres on a 2-yard TD pass and Mark Kapenga scored the two-point conversion for a 54-0 lead.

Crookston scored their only touchdown on a 15 yard run in the fourth quarter.

“Overall, I am very pleased with how this team came out and played,” said Pelican Rapids Head Coach Eli Beachy.  “There were a lot of things I didn’t like about how things flowed throughout the game from a personnel and alignment standpoint, but we’ll get that cleaned up as the team gains familiarity with their quarterback back on the field.  The energy from our older guys was commendable as they brought it all night long for our JV players when they were able to get a run in the second half.  There isn’t a much better feeling than being able to get every player on the sidelines into the game, especially on homecoming night.  Next week we will need to clean up a few things, but a lot of those are organic with time.”

Jack Kapenga finished with 89 yards on 7 carries and Mark Kapenga carried 9 times for 48 yards. Defensive leaders were Justin Jacobson (7.5 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, .5 sack, 2 QB hurries), Mark Kapenga (4 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 2 QB hurries), Channing Russman (6.5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack), Esteban Garza (5 tackles, 1 sack), Jack Kapenga (6.5 tackles) and Ethan Isaman (5.5 tackles for loss).

Pelican Rapids (3-1) will play at Frazee (2-2) on Friday night.
