The Alexandria Cardinals placed first with their top five runners finishing in the top 9 individually, and the Fergus Falls girls’ cross country team placed fifth out of nine teams at the Rocori Invitational on Thursday.  The Cardinals won the event with 30 points, well ahead of runner-up Willmar with 78.

“The weather brought some tough heat to race in, affecting their final times,” stated Head Coach Niki Welde of the Otters.  “Conditions like this make it uncomfortable to race and focus, but the girls handled it well.”

Cassie Welman made the medal stand with a 3rd place finish.  “By the third mile there was a gap in front of her and behind her,” reported Welde.  “She didn’t have anyone putting pressure on her.  That can be difficult when you are racing for a goal time.  She didn’t seem to be affected though.”

Naomi Dummer came in 19th, running second for the Otters.  “Sarah Grotberg came in 3rd for us with a hard earned finish,” noted Coach Welde.  “I never worry that she will leave too much for the end of her race.  She leaves everything on the course.  Violet McConn continues to move her way up through the ranks on the team and she is showing more and more confidence with every race.  Savannah Lee was our 5th place scoring spot.  She ran a race close to her season best on a hot, challenging course.  Julia Anderson and Hannah Scharnberg rounded out our top seven with each showing great determination and grit.”

The Otters Middle School team had a 3rd place finish with excellent times throughout.
