The West Central Area Knights survived a hotly contested five set match with Melrose on Tuesday night, prevailing 3-2 (13-25, 25-19, 25-17, 23-25, 15-13).  “This was an intense night, no doubt,” acknowledged Head Coach Missy Foslien of WCA.  “Melrose did not look good in their warm-up at all, while our girls looked on fire, but what we didn’t see was their blocking game.”

Foslien continued, “We started out with the wind taken out of our sails, down early in the first set.  Melrose starts six seniors, who play pretty solid defense and have great court sense.  In the first set we looked defeated and we were blocked a ton.  The girls turned it around in the second set, but every time we got a 5 or more point lead, we let teams inch their way back.  We won sets two and three, and should have won set four, but some defensive errors hurt us late in the game.  The fifth set saw us get off to a 5-1 lead, however, they caught us at 8-8 and took a 13-11 lead.  Wylie McNally (15/15 serving, 23 digs) came in with some clutch serves and Mya Foslien (17/17 serving, 1 ace, 24 kills, 3 blocks, 32 digs) was back in the front row to end the match.  Whitney Westrom (20/21 serving, 8 kills, 9 digs) had a kill to put us at 14-13 and then Mya put the last point away with an amazing kill off the back end line.”

Other statistical leaders for the lady Knights were Macy Grosz (10/10 serving, 44 set assists, 20 digs), Jaclynn Nelson (6 kills, 4 digs, 4 blocks), Madelyn Westrom (7/8 serving, 33 digs) and Izzy Puchalski (16/17 serving, 8 kills, 22 digs).

“It was a heart pounding match for sure,” concluded Coach Foslien.  “We face Minnewaska Area on Thursday, which will surely be a back-and-forth match, too.”
