Perham struck quickly with 14 first quarter points on the way to a 21-0 halftime advantage and a 24-0 season opening victory over the Hawley Nuggets at Ted Meinhover Field in Perham.

The Yellowjackets took the opening kickoff and went 73 yards on 7 plays, punching the ball into the end zone on a 19 yard pass from Blaiz Schmidt to Gage AanensonHudson Hackel added the extra point kick for an early 7-0 lead.  The Yellowjackets added a second Schmidt to Aanenson TD pass, this one from 36 yards, along with a Hackel PAT kick for a 14-0 lead with 6:22 left in the opening quarter.  They increased their lead to 21-0 with a touchdown at 8:05 of the second quarter, capping a 13-play, 68-yard drive when Schmidt hit Braylon Rach from 20 yards and Hackel again booting the extra point.  The Yellowjackets added a 29 yard field goal by Hackel with 37 seconds remaining in the third quarter to give them a 24-0 lead, closing out the scoring on the night.

Hudson Hackel ran for 70 yards on 9 carries and Braylon Rach added 69 yards on 13 attempts.  Perham had 133 yards on the ground and added 185 yards through the air.  Quarterback Blaiz Schmidt completed 8-of-18 passes and threw 3 TD’s.  His leading receiver was Gage Aanenson, who caught 4 passes for 103 yards and a score.

Hawley was held to just 35 rushing yards and 187 total yards in the game.  Quarterback Noah Nelson was 10-for-24 for 152 yards.  Levi Lelm (4 catches, 70 yards) and Zachariah Libak (4 catches, 42 yards) were the leading receivers for the Nuggets.  Jack Ames had a team high 38 yards rushing on 9 attempts and Lucas Schenck had 34 yards on 5 carries.  The Nuggets put the ball on the ground 11 times, however, they did not turn the ball over once.  Poor snaps, poor tosses from QB to running backs and poor hand-off exchanges led to numerous offensive miscues.

Perham will play at Detroit Lakes next Friday night at 7:00pm, while Hawley will host Frazee in their home opener.
