Thursday night the Fergus Falls tennis team traveled to Alexandria for a Central Lakes Conference and section 8AA dual against the Cardinals.  The conditions were incredibly windy throughout the match and everybody came ready to play this big match-up.  The match took 3 hours to complete with Alexandria edging out the Otters with a final score of 5-2.

With Alexandria's 12-court complex we were able to throw out all the varsity matches right away.  Things were pretty tight right from the get-go tonight.  The first match to finish up was Ali Bredenberg at 4th singles.  Ali played a great match for us tonight, winning in straight sets 6-4, 6-2.  Layla Zosel concluded around that same time, falling in straight sets at third singles.  Our team score was 1-1.  The next matches to wrap up were 2nd and 3rd doubles.  Hannah Anderson and Kaia Ness fell 6-2, 6-3 at 2nd doubles while Dillyn Lill and Carsyn Lill made a nice comeback after a slow start to their match winning 7-6(4), 6-0.  This made our team score 2-2 with three very close matches still in play.  Isabella Abrahams found herself in a very even match-up at first singles with one of the top players in our section, Marisa Rousu.  This match exhibited a great display of winners and shot variety by both players.  In the end, Marisa edged out Bella 6-4, 6-4 to put the Cardinals ahead 3-2.

The last two matches on court were the 1st doubles team of Hattie Fullhart and Ashtyn Lill and Ruby Ellison at 2nd singles.   Both matches were barn-burners that lasted over 2 hours and 50 minutes and both matches came down to the end of the third set.  Hattie and Ashtyn went back and forth games the entire 3rd set and eventually found themselves in a third set tie-breaker.  The duo fought off a pair of match points and even had one of their own before eventually falling 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(10-8). Meanwhile, Ruby found herself in a hole, down 4-1 in her final set before battling back to keep things alive before eventually falling 7-6(2), 6-7(6), 6-4.

This was really a great outing for our girls.  Phenomenal matches all around tonight.  The difference in this match was literally a handful of points.  Had a couple of tiebreaks gone our way, we could have been on the winning end, so the girls have nothing to hang their heads about.  The good news for us is that we see Alexandria again in about a month and we welcome the opportunity to take the court against them again.

The Otters play host to Thief River Falls on Friday morning at 10:00am at the Kennedy school courts.
