The Battle Lake Battlers defeated Ashby in their volleyball season opener 3-0 (25-8, 25-16, 25-19) on Tuesday night in Ashby.

“We are a young team, working with athletes who are all trying new positons this year, as well as becoming re-introduced with each other on the court in new lineups,” stated Ashby Head Coach Hayley Stevens.  “We started rusty, bas the scores show we began to find a rhythm.  Communication was proving to be difficult at the start, but that also was working better towards the end of the match.”

The Battlers got off to a quick start in set 1 and never looked back.  Kailie Robinson served seven in a row in set 1 to give the Battlers a 12-2 lead.  The Arrows regrouped for sets 2 and 3.  The Arrows had a 13-8 lead in set 3 but the Battlers fought back to tie the set at 16 and maintained the momentum to finish the match.

The Battlers were led by Kenady Cameron with 11 kills, 5 aces, and 2 blocks.  Belle Bormann added 5 kills while Robinson, Kinley Bormann, and Sophie Akerman each added 3 kills.  Akerman dished out 21 assists while Robinson, Bormann, Addi Maethner, and Cameron each served well for the Battlers.

No Ashby stats were reported.

Battle Lake will travel to Bertha-Hewitt Thursday for their next match.  Ashby will head to Ortonville Thursday and then will host Underwood the following Thursday.

“It’s great to get back on the court in a pressure situation to show athletes that it sometimes takes more than practice to get our adrenaline flowing,” noted Coach Stevens.  “I’m hopeful that this group will find that and trust each other as much as I trust them out there doing the job that they have been assigned.”
