Tuesday evening saw the battle of Cardinals when Alexandria hosted Willmar at Viking Bank Field in a boys’ soccer contest. Alexandria has not scored more than 3 goals on Willmar since 2005!  Alexandria continues to show strength and tenacity as they are coming alive at the start of the season. With an incredibly physical match, both teams fought until the very final whistle with the tension of a Section Championship match, ending in a 4-4 draw.

The scoring opened up in the first half with Willmar finding the first goal in the 18th minute of play and again in the 26th minute of play. Down by 2, Alexandria fought back with goals coming in the 28th minute when Cole Haabala scored from a set piece and again with Patrick Klecker finishing a deflected shot by Cole Haabala in the 42nd minute of play. Ending the half at a 2-2 draw.

The second half scoring started with Alexandria's Otto Anderson finding a goal with the assist from Cole Haabala in the 45th minute of play. Willmar rallied back and found a goal in the 62nd minute. Willmar was awarded a penalty kick which they scored in the 66th minute. With Willmar up 4-3, Alexandria didn't quick and found the final and equalizing goal of the match in the 68th minute of play when Sam Williams sent a cross pitch ball where Fransico Rodriguez was able to finish.

The Gatorade of the Game went to Isak Rhen for his relentless attitude while on defense the entire game. Isak played a key role in keeping the Alex Cards in the match.

The Cardinal Boys Soccer Team is 1-0-2 on the season and will look to make their first trip down I-94 to Sauk Rapids Rice on Thursday for a 5pm kick off.
