The Ashby/Brandon-Evansville Cross Country team saw graduating senior Logan Froemming set the school record in the Section 6A meet last season, just missing out on a state tournament trip.  “We have a couple of individuals who saw his success and want to take it to another level,” said seventh-year Head Coach Robert Bosma.  “This year there is a different vibe in practice.  Everyone is more focused and dedicated.  They are all pushing each other and want to improve.  If this continues throughout the year, great things will come.”

The boys’ return senior Cohen Reiland, juniors August Bredberg, Donell Lee, Darius Grussing and Justin Lederman, and sophomore Kenneth Spielman

“Senior Micah Fossell didn’t run last year, but he is back and pushing the team every day,” said Coach Bosma.  “Freshman Benjamin Myron is very dedicated and keeps pushing to give more every day.  Freshman Dylan Johnson and 8th-grader Nathan Brethorst are also new to Cross Country this year and with their wrestling background, demonstrate how to work hard in every drill.”

The girls’ return seniors Ashley Paulson and Naomi Fournier, junior Tuyet Vy Bui, sophomore Mary Fossell, and freshman Hope Rovang.  Bosma says 8th-graders Lauren Thoennes and Lexi Bitzan have looked good in the early season practices.  “Both girls ran some varsity and JV races last year, but are now stronger and more dedicated.”

Bosma will be assisted by Emily Nelson.  He says Bertha-Hewitt is the team to beat in the Park Region Conference and Section 6A, with Minnewaska Area and Staples-Motley the top teams on the girls’ side.

“I preach to the team every day that we try to get 1% better and eventually it adds up,” concluded Coach Bosma.  “You can already tell in practice that they embrace the mantra and are getting significantly better every day.”
