Peder Naatz begins his 24th year as Head Coach of the Hawley Nuggets in 2023. Hawley was 2-7 a year ago and Naatz says, “We have a great group of kids that have a great attitude as a whole. They have been bringing a lot of positive energy and competition to the preseason practices and have been working very hard to make improvements over last season.” Naatz will be assisted by Tim Pederson, Nick Birchem, Aaron Haugen and Zion Smith.
Returning letter winners are seniors Alex Paulson (OL/DL), Kolin Larson (OL/DL), Brevin Stoa (WR/DB), Davaun Stock (RB/LB), Karson Kopacek (S), Lucas Schenck (CB) and Tyler Geray (TE/DL), and juniors Noah Nelson (QB), Jack Ames (RB/LB), Levi Lelm (WR/DB), and Blake Bigger (OL/DL). Junior Mark Schauer (QB/WR/DB) is expected to make an impact at the varsity level this fall. Paulson, Stock, Nelson and Ames will serve as team captains.
Naatz says Barnesville and Pelican Rapids are the teams to beat in Section 8AA.
“If things continue to progress and we stay healthy, it will take a good football team to beat us late in the season,” concluded Coach Naatz.
