Lady Spartans Struggle at Mystic Invite

The college volleyball season got underway on Friday and Saturday as the M State lady Spartans participated in the Mystic Invite at Bismarck State.  M State lost two matches each day, beginning with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-14, 25-9) defeat at the hands of the host team and a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 25-19) loss to Miles Community College on Friday.  On Saturday, the lady Spartans fell to Lake Region State College 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) and then lost to Dawson Community College 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-13).

Attack leaders against Bismarck State were Kaleigh Peterson, Kaleigh Sip and Kendra Emery with 5 kills apiece.  Cassie Dahl had a team high 9 assists and Sydney Schaefer added 4.  Sip and Maddie Ballweg each served up an ace.  Defensively, Ballweg led with 9 digs and Dahl added 7.

In the match against Miles Community College, Emery and Dahl each had 7 kills to lead M State.  Dahl and Schaefer contributed 9 and 7 assists, respectively.  Ballweg had a team high 16 digs and Emery joined her in double digits with 11.  Service leaders were Dahl (8/8, 1 ace), Sip (7/8, 1 ace) and Peterson (10/12, 1 ace).

Emery (11 kills, 11 digs, 1 solo block, 1 block assist, 6/6 serving, 1 ace) had a solid all-around match against Lake Region State.  Dahl contributed 6 kills, 10 assists, 12 digs and a perfect 12-for-12 from the serving line with 3 aces.  Ballweg added 13 digs and 4 service aces on 8-of-9 serving.  Schaefer had 7 assists and was 13-for-15 serving with an ace.

In the final match on Saturday against Dawson, leaders were Emery (5 kills, 8/8 serving, 5 digs), Dahl (12/12 serving, 1 ace, 12 digs, 3 kills, 14 set assists), Sip (4 kills), Madi Foss (4 kills), Peterson (4 kills, 7/7 serving, 1 ace), Ballweg 5/5 serving, 10 digs), Schaefer (10/11 serving, 8 digs), Avery Knutson (9 digs, 7/8 serving, 2 aces) and Ariana Noplos (3 kills, 1 solo block).

“It was a bit of a rough weekend without starter Faith Marion,” stated Head Coach Abby Crowser.  “We are hoping to have her back for our home match this coming Friday against Central Lakes.”
