The Babe Ruth Baseball season ended on Saturday for the Ottertail Central 15U Black Dawgs as they lost a 6-4 battle with the Buckley Bombers from Border, Colorado on the final day of Pool Play at the 2023 Midwest Plains Babe Ruth Regional Tournament in Henning.  OTC ends the season with a record of 10-12-1.

The Bombers struck for a run in the first inning, an inning which featured a great defensive play by OTC.  After Kole Fornander singled to lead off the inning and stole second base, Caleb Garcia delivered a base hit to center field.  Ryan Despard charged the ball and threw a strike to catcher Ayden Olson who applied the tag on Fornander as he tried to score from second base.  Garcia took second on the throw and came in to score on a two-out double by clean-up hitter Lane Brennaman.

OTC tied the game with a run in the second, courtesy of three errors by the Bombers.  The run scored on a ground out off the bat of Olin Link, scoring Despard.  Buckley took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when Marcus Steinbar reached third base on a pair of OTC errors and scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Lennox Huwa.

The Bombers extended their lead to 5-1 with 3 runs in the fourth as they sent eight batters to the plate.  RBI hits by Fornander and Garcia highlighted the inning.

In the top of the fifth, OTC scored twice to cut the lead to 5-3.Quenton Beske led off with a walk and Max Grove reached base on an infield single.  A ground ball by Beck Thorson brought home Beske and Thorson reached on an error.  A wild pitch scored the other run of the inning.  The Bombers got one back in the bottom of the inning as Zander Polk doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Steinbar.

After Despard put the side down in order in the bottom of the sixth, OTC rallied, scoring a run on a base hit by Dawson Bushman and loading the bases with two outs.  Tate Renquest was able to induce a fielder’s choice ground out to end the game.

For Ottertail Central, offensive player of the game honors went to Ryan Despard and defensive player of the game was catcher Ayden Olson.  Olson also received a Commissioner’s Challenge Coin for his attitude and effort throughout the weekend.  Buckley Bombers were led by offensive player of the game Caleb Garcia and defensive player of the game, starting pitcher Zander Polk.

"Even though the games didn't go the way we wanted to, I am proud of the way the boys played hard all the way to the last out," commented OTC Head Coach Evan Meece.  "We battled and fought right down to the last out and played with pride.  The boys should be proud of the way they held themselves and represented OTC Baseball to everyone around the Midwest Plains."

The second game of the day pitted two Minnesota rivals in Moorhead and Breckenridge.  Moorhead entered the game 2-0 in pool play and had clinched a spot in Sunday’s quarterfinal.  Breckenridge entered the game 0-2 in pool play and had already been eliminated from Sunday’s contention.  The game started as a pitcher's duel between Conner Zimmerman from Moorhead and Lawson Oliphant from Breckenridge.  Moorhead ended up pulling away from Breckenridge, taking the victory 7-0.  Players of the game for Breckenridge were Charlie Kratcha on offense and Gavin Roufert on defense.  For Moorhead, offensive player of the game was Taye Reich and defensive player of the game was Conner Zimmerman.  Moorhead moves to 3-0 in pool play and gets the number 1 seed in the National Division.  Breckenridge moves to 0-3 and their season comes to an end.

The third game of the day featured two undefeated teams in the American Division with Fergus Falls, MN taking on Park River, ND.  Both teams had already clinched spots in Sunday’s quarterfinal, but were playing for a chance not to see Moorhead until the championship game.  Park River never missed a beat on their first two games of the tournament, easily defeating Fergus Falls 8-1. The one run was the lone run given up by Park River in pool play as they finished 3-0 to take the #1 seed in the American Division.  Fergus Falls fell to 2-1 and will be the 2 seed in the American Division and face Moorhead in semifinal action.  Players of the game for Fergus Falls were Micah Johnson on defense and Hunter Powers on offense.  For Park River, James Larson earned offensive player of the game honors and Trace Anderson earned defensive player of the game.

The final game of the day was the biggest game on the docket as Williston, ND and Charleston, MO played in a win or go home game.  Both teams entered at 1-1 and were looking to move on to Sunday and join #1 seed in the National Division Moorhead.  The loser would finish third in their division and be eliminated.  The game lived up to the hype as a close battle ended with Williston advancing to bracket play with a 5-3 victory.  Charleston did not go down quietly as they were led by a huge, towering home run by Brayson Green in the top of the third inning.  That wasn’t quite enough in the end, as Williston was led by starting pitcher Grayden Bowles’ complete game.  Offensive player of the game honors for Charleston went to Jamison Sifford while defensive player of the game went to Leightin Hicks.  For Williston, offensive player of the game was Caleb Bernal and defensive player of the game was Grayden Bowles.  Brayson Green and Cody Massey for Charleston were awarded Commissioner Challenge Coins by Commissioner Todd Corrow for their effort and attitudes throughout the tournament.  Charleston finishes 1-2 in pool play and Williston finishes 2-1 and secures the #2 seed in the National Division.

Sunday at Tony Kawlewski Field will feature semifinal games between #1 seed from the American Division Park River, ND and #2 from the National Division Williston, ND at 10am.  The second semifinal game will feature #1 seed from the National Division Moorhead, MN facing #2 from the American Division Fergus Falls at 1pm.  The winners of each semifinal game will faceoff at 4pm with the champion earning a trip to the Babe Ruth World Series in Jamestown, NY.

Prior to the championship game, the Norm and Colleen Travis Sportsmanship Award will be awarded.  All-Tournament Team winners will also be awarded after the completion of each game on Sunday at Tony Kawlewski Field.
