The 13-15 Babe Ruth Midwest Plains Regional Tournament continued Friday at Tony Kawlewski Field in Henning, MN. Four games were on the slate and the night was capped off by a fantastic fireworks show put on by the Henning and Dalton Fire Departments.

Game 1 on the day featured Williston, ND and Moorhead, MN.  Moorhead escaped with the 8-5 victory after Williston battled back and put the pressure on in the 7th inning.  Moorhead was powered offensively by a big 2-out grand slam in the fifth inning by Riley Dickhaus, who earned offensive player of the game.  Defensively, Moorhead’s starting pitcher Jonas Schaumann and CF Taye Reich each earned player of the game honors.  For Williston, Jaxon Jeannotte earned offensive player of the game honors and Caleb Bernal earned defensive player of the game honors.  Moorhead moves to 2-0 while Williston dropped to 1-1 in pool play.

Mother nature had to make her presence known by providing a much needed rain at a most inopportune time.  A brief delay interrupted game 1, but game 2 between Park River, ND and Border, CO had to wait out a 2 hour rain delay before they could begin their game.  Park River controlled the game, defeating Buckley by a score of 7-0. For Park River, offensive player of the game honors went to Tucker Omdahl.  Defensive player of the game went to Isaac Porter.  For Border, offensive player of the game was earned by Zander Polk.  Defensive player of the game was Tate Renquist.  Park River moves to 2-0 and Buckley drops to 0-2 in pool play.

The third game of the day featured Charleston, MO taking on Breckenridge, MN.  After a low scoring affair from both sides for much of the game, Charleston broke the game open and took the win 10-2.  For Breckenridge, offensive player of the game was Gavin Roufert.  Defensive player of the game was Lawson Oliphant.  Oliphant was also awarded a Commissioner’s Challenge Coin by State Commissioner Todd Corrow.  For Charleston, they were led offensively by Cody Massey and defensively by Peyton Mitchell, each earning player of the game honors.  Charleston moves to 1-1, while Breckenridge drops to 0-2 in pool play.

The final game of the day pitted the host Ottertail Central Bulldogs taking on Highway 210 rival Fergus Falls in the night cap.  The game started nearly 2 hours after scheduled time, but drew a large crowd with extremely high intensity.  OTC started the scoring in the bottom of the first, but Fergus Falls answered in the top of the second.  OTC took the lead back in the bottom of the second, but Fergus Falls regained the lead for good in the top of the 3rd and cruised to a 13-4 victory.  For Ottertail Central, Ryan Despard was awarded Offensive Player of the Game and Rowan Finseth was awarded Defensive Player of the Game.  For Fergus Falls, Micah Johnson took home offensive player of the game honors and Jacob Fronning took home defensive player of the game honors.  OTC moves to 0-2 in pool play and Fergus Falls improves to 2-0.

“We started the game exactly the way we wanted to, being aggressive on the bases and opening up a 2-0 lead," reported OTC Head Coach Evan Meece.  "After Fergus took the lead, we again battled back to regain it.  But then the wheels slowly started to fall off and we couldn’t get it back on.  We’ve got a quick turnaround, so we don’t have time to dwell on anything and get back to business in the morning.  I couldn’t be prouder of this community coming together for this tournament.  After the rain today, the countless amount of people working on the field and helping to make sure we could still play ball the rest of the day was amazing.  I can’t thank all the volunteers that have made this happen enough.”

After the completion of the nightcap, those that stuck around were treated to a wonderful fireworks show put on by the Henning and Dalton Fire Departments.  Saturday features the final day of pool play in the tournament.  The day will start at 10am with Ottertail Central taking on Border, CO.  At 1pm, in-state rivals Moorhead and Breckenridge will battle.  At 4pm, there will be a contest of undefeated teams in the American Division when Fergus Falls and Park River, ND take the field.  The final game of pool play for the tournament will feature two 1-1 teams in the National Division with Charleston, MO taking on Williston, ND in a win or go home contest.  At the completion of pool play, the top two teams in each division will advance to the semifinals and finals which will take place on Sunday at Tony Kawlewski Field.
