Fergus Falls traveled to Cowboy Field in Breckenridge for a Countryside League contest against the Breckenridge Bucks on Friday night.  The Canes jumped out to a 5-2 lead and went on to post a 7-3 victory as they improved their season record to 11-3 overall and 10-0 in league play.

Alex Hexum (7IP, 11K, 3BB, 4H, 3R, 1ER) was the winning pitcher.  Pete Gaustad finished off the game on the mound, getting 5 of the 6 outs he recorded via strikeouts.  “Ethan Gronwold did a great job catching his first game as a Cane and Parker Thielke got his first hits as a Cane in his first start,” reported Manager Davy Johnson.

Breckenridge took a 1-0 lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning.  Jack Hiedeman walked with one out, moved to third on a single by Brayden Wahl and scored when the ball was misplayed in left field.

Fergus Falls took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second.  Gaustad and Austin Stanislawski singled to lead off the inning.  Owen Krueger forced Austin out at second base and a ground out by Gronwold scored Gaustad to tie the game.  Parker Thielke then doubled home Krueger with his 1st Canes hit, giving the visitors a 2-1 lead.  Breckenridge pulled into a 2-2 tie with a run in the bottom of the second.  Isaac Loosmore reached on an error and moved to third base after an errant pick-off attempt.  He scored on a single by Mitch Porter.

A 3-run third inning gave the Canes the lead for good.  Carter Thielke and Darin Stanislawski started the inning with singles.  Alex Hexum then grounded to third base, Thielke broke for home drawing a throw and safely scrambled back to third with Hexum reaching first base on the play.  Carter scored on a wild pitch and two outs later Gronwold drove in two runs with a base hit.

Breckenridge got one run back in the fourth as Loosmore singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on an Emmit Vig single, making it a 5-3 ballgame.

Fergus Falls added two insurance runs in the top of the ninth.  Carter Thielke led off with a double and scored on a Darin Stanislawski double.  Owen Krueger then delivered a single to score Stanislawski.

Leading hitters for the Canes were Carter Thielke (2-5, 2B, 2R), Darin Stanislawski (3-5, 2 2B, 2R, RBI), Austin Stanislawski (2-3, 2BB) and Parker Thielke (2-4, 2B).

Five different players had one hit each to lead the Bucks.  Mitch Porter (6IP, 6K, 2BB, 5H, 2R, 2ER) pitched well in relief of starter Hunter Wamre (3IP, 3K, 1BB, 7H, 5ER).  Breckenridge Coach Kevin Hiedeman stated, “Our inability to get a clutch hit with runners on base and the Canes ability to get 2 out hits was the difference in the game.”

Fergus Falls will finish out the regular season with a game at Dent on Sunday at 1:30pm.

Breck finished the regular season in second place and will host the first two weekends of the Region 16C Tournament starting on July 29.  The Bucks first game of the Region Tournament will be Saturday, July 29 at 8:00pm, while the Canes will play on Sunday, July 30 at 5:00pm with opponents to be determined.  Region 16C consists of teams from the Countryside and Resorters Leagues.  The bracket will be released after the completion of Sunday’s games.
