Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 traveled to Detroit Lakes on Thursday for a pair of District games prior to the 4th of July break on the schedule.  Post 30’s offense did its part, but DL found ways to break through and battle back for two wins, taking game one 6-5, and game two 12-8.

Owen Krueger (4.1IP, 10H, 5R, 4ER, 3BB, 2K) started on the mound in game one and pitched much better than his stat line indicates.  Evan Lindgren (1.2IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER) came on in relief.  Leading hitters for Post 30 were Lindgren (2-4, R), Brock Scheurman (2-4, R, RBI) and Ben Swanson (1-3, RBI).

DL Post 15 had a 6-1 lead going into the sixth inning, but Post 30 kept battling and scored two runs in the 6th and 7th, just falling short, 6-5.  Post 30 stranded 10 men on base in game one.

The teams needed extra innings to decide game two.  DL jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one inning, however, Post 30 answered back with Ethan Gronwold doubling to right field with the bases loaded and two outs to score 3 runs and give Fergus Falls a 4-2 lead.  The game was tied at 5 going into the 7th inning.  Post 30 scored three runs to take an 8-5 lead.  Gronwold singled to right to lead things off.  Ben Swanson followed with a double to right field to put runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Scheurman then doubled to center field to plate both runners.  Will Gronwold capped the inning off with a clutch single to center field, scoring Scheurman.  DL battled back in their half of the 7th, tying the game at 8-8 via 3 hits, 2 walks and an error.  Fergus Falls failed to score in the 8th inning, but DL loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning and ended it with a walk-off grand slam home run.

Colin Becker (5IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 5K) started on the mound and threw very well.  Riston Albert came on in relief (2.1IP, 6H, 9R, 7ER, 5BB, 3K), taking the loss.  Scheurman (2-4, 2B, 2RBI), Ethan Gronwold (2-4, 2B, 3RBI) and Becker (2-3, 2B) led Post 30 at the plate.

“Tough way to end both games,” noted Head Coach Trevor Larson of Post 30.  “The boys fought hard and deserved a better fate.  Owen pitched well in game one and had about 6 hits that just fell in very softly.  Colin also pitched well and gave us 5 very solid innings and a great chance to win in game two.  We need to continue to work with our pitchers to work ahead in counts and throw quality strikes to make hitters hit our pitches.  At the end of the day it wasn’t the result we were hoping for, but the boys fought their tails off and displayed a never quit attitude that we can build on.”

Fergus Falls Post 30 is off until next Friday when they travel to Casselton to play Devils Lake at 2:30pm in the opening round of the Casselton Tournament.
