The Fergus Falls Hurricanes traveled to Hawley on Sunday for a Countryside League contest against the Hawks. The Canes jumped on top with 4 runs in the first inning and never looked back as they went on to record an 8-3 victory, improving their season record to 7-2 and the league record to 6-0.
Sean McGuire and Carter Thielke got things started with a pair of singles and then both runners scored on a Tosten Mann double. After a strikeout, Alex Hexum reached on an error. Mann then stole third and Hexum swiped second. Thomas Bosek hit a grounder to third base but the throw home was too late as Mann scored and Bosek reached first base safely. Owen Krueger then knocked in Hexum with a base hit.
A lead-off homer by Thielke in the fifth inning gave the Canes a 5-0 advantage.
They increased their lead to 8-0 with 3 in the seventh. Pete Gaustad was hit by a pitch, McGuire singled him to second and Thielke was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Mann delivered a 2-run single and a Hexum ground out scored the third run of the inning.
Hawley scored all 3 of their runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk, 3 singles, an error and a passed ball.
Fergus Falls was led by McGuire (3-4, 2B, 2R), Thielke (2-4, HR, 3R, RBI) and Mann (2-5, 2B, 4RBI, R). Hexum (8IP, 6K, 3BB, 6H, 0R) improved to 2-1 on the season.
“Canes made several nice defensive plays behind Hexum to keep the Hawks scoreless for 8 innings, including a 4-6-3 double play in the seventh,” reported Manager Davy Johnson.
Hawley was led by Justin Stalboerger (3-5, SB). Mason Klevgaard (6IP, 6K, 0BB, 6H, 5R, 3ER) took the loss.
The Canes will host the Moorhead Mudcats at 7:00pm Wednesday at American Legion Field at DeLagoon Park in Fergus Falls.
