The Perham Yellowjackets opened play at the AA State Baseball Tournament with a 7-4, 12-inning upset win over third seeded Foley on Tuesday at Putz Field in St. Cloud. Foley broke a 1-1 tie with a 3-run fifth inning, however, Perham struck for 3 in the top of the seventh to tie the game at 4-4. After four scoreless extra innings, Perham scored 3 times in the top of the twelfth and held Foley without a run in the bottom of the twelfth to advance to the semifinals.
Evan Kovash (3-6, 2B, RBI), Blaiz Schmidt (2-2, 2RBI, 2R, 3BB), Gage Aanenson (1-5, 2RBI), Austin Schmelz (1-6, RBI), Ben Shumansky (2-6) and Brock Melgard (1-3, 2B, SB, R) were the hitting leaders for the Yellowjackets.
Kovash was outstanding in relief, pitching 6 2/3 innings, scattering 7 hits, walking two, striking out 4 and holding Foley without a run. He was the fourth pitcher for the Yellowjackets, earning the victory.
