Fergus Falls American Legion Post 30 finished up their opening weekend of the 2023 season in Wahpeton on Sunday, facing off against East Grand Forks and LaMoure, North Dakota.  EGF posted a 7-1 win in the morning game and LaMoure won the afternoon battle, 10-2.

Sammy Holmes JR, started on the mound and was very effective, pitching 7 innings, striking out 5, walking one and allowing 5 earned run on 6 hits.

Leading hitters for Post 30 were Logan Larson, Brock Schuerman, Owen Krueger, Carston Fronning and Brandon Brown.  Each of them collected one hit in three at bats.

East grand Forks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top half of the second inning.  Post 30 scored their lone run in the bottom of the fifth to make it 4-1.  Fronning led off with a single, Will Gronwold followed up with a walk, and after consecutive strikeouts, Larson stroked a single to left, scoring Fronning from second base.

“The coaching staff was super impressed with Sammy on the mound today,” reported Fergus Falls Head Coach Trevor Larson.  “Being able to throw a complete game and keep us in the game until the end was huge!  He competed his tail off and threw a ton of strikes.”

In the loss to LaMoure, Ben Swanson, Evan Lindgren and Owen Krueger did the pitching.  Leading hitters were Larson (1-2, RBI, BB), Lindgren (1-1) and Holmes (1-1, 3B, RBI).

LaMoure took control of the game early, scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the first.  Post 30 scored their two runs in the top of the fifth with Holmes providing the highlight with a RBI triple.

“Overall, I am happy with how the boys competed this weekend,” noted Coach Larson.  “For about half the team this was their first exposure to the Senior Legion level.  Regardless of the score, the guys kept their heads up and their effort was always there.  I am pleased with the progress we made this weekend.  We need to continue to work on hitting with runners in scoring position.”

Post 30 starts off district play with Bemidji coming to Legion Field on Wednesday for games at 4 and 6pm.  They will then hit the road again with a trip to Moorhead on Thursday for two games.
